Caring
We assessed 1 quality statement in the caring key question and found an area of concern. The scores for these areas have been combined with scores based on the rating from the last inspection, which was good. Though the assessment of this area indicated an area which needed improvement since the last inspection, our rating for the key question remains good. People were not always provided with opportunities to ensure they had choice and control over how they wished to spend their time. People were encouraged and helped by staff to do as much as they could for themselves, to maintain their independence.
This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Independence, choice and control
People told us they were supported to have choice and control over their own care. However, people and their relatives said they weren’t always supported to spend time doing things they enjoyed. A relative of a person we spoke with said, “My relative was a keen gardener and I know [they] would love to spend time in the gardens.” Another relative we spoke with felt there were missed opportunities for their loved one to spend time doing things they enjoyed such as bingo and singing. A person we spoke with said, staff encouraged them to do things where possible for themselves to keep them as independent as possible.
Staff and the management team recognised the gaps relating to activities and the impact this may have on people, they told us they were actively trying to recruit an activities coordinator to ensure people lived fulfilled lives. Staff respected people’s ability to make choices and told us they would always encourage people to make their own choices. A staff member we spoke with said, “We find out what people want and respect this, we encourage people to do as much as possible for themselves.”
We observed staff respecting people’s wishes. For example, we observed staff asking people where they would like to sit during lunch and in the lounge. We observed all staff to treat people with kindness and compassion. We observed staff playing a game with one person who appeared content and comfortable in staff’s company. We observed staff to encourage a person to maintain their independence during lunch and they were offered the option to wear a protective cover over their clothes to maintain their dignity. This promoted people’s independence and dignity.
Staff had guidance on how to support people to be as independent as possible. Care plans were reviewed to ensure people’s goals and preferences were reviewed. However, these reviews were not always picking up inconsistencies in people’s care records. Due to the changes in the management team, there had not been regular meetings for people to ensure their feedback was obtained on the care they received. This was a missed opportunity to improve people’s experience. This was fed back to the management team who told us they planned to increase the number of meetings with both people and relatives.
