People were safe and protected from harm, procedures were robust. Staff understood the different types of abuse and were clear around reporting concerns. Risks to people were managed well. Staff demonstrated an in-depth knowledge of people and how they managed their risks to ensure people remained safe. Assessments were detailed, personalised, and kept up to date.

Safeguarding

People told us they enjoyed living at Linkfield Court (Bournemouth) Limited and felt safe living there. One person told us, “Yes, we are very much safe, we are safe in our beds at night, they make sure of it.” Another person said, “I feel safe here, I used to do a lot here, helping and everything but I can’t do much now as my back hurts, just getting old.” Another person said, “The most wonderful thing is you feel safe here.” The home had a friendly and homely atmosphere, relatives visited at any time and were made to feel welcome. One relative told us, “I visit every day. I feel [person] is very safe here. [Person] would fall at home; they are much safer here. It’s a very good place. I’m always welcome to visit any time I want.”

Staff spoke knowledgably regarding reporting potential abuse and understood safeguarding procedures. Staff had received safeguarding training and had regular updates and refresher sessions. Team meetings were used as a forum to discuss safeguarding topics and ensured staff remained up to date with their understanding. One member of staff told us, “We have little workshop scenarios set up that cover different areas (of abuse), just an hour at a time to make sure we understand.”

Staff interacted well with people. They were respectful, friendly, and kind. Staff knew people well and knew how each person preferred their care and support to be given. Staff were attentive, ensuring people were comfortable and had everything they needed within reach, such as drinks, snacks, and mobility aids.

The provider had policies in place that covered safeguarding and whistleblowing. These gave staff clear guidance to follow if they needed to refer any concerns. There was a clear safeguarding reporting system in place that staff expressed full confidence in using.

Involving people to manage risks

People told us staff involved and consulted them in regard to how they received their care and support. Relatives told us they were involved as appropriate. One relative said, “They always let me know if [person] is not well. They are very good at telling me straight away. The staff are good, they know how [person] likes to be looked after.”

Staff demonstrated in depth knowledge on how people preferred their care and support to be given to ensure they were cared for safely and as they wished. A member of staff explained how one person now needed to have the support of equipment as their mobility had reduced, they told us, “[Person] now needs two staff to support transfers with using a hoist to keep them safe. [Person] is happy with this process. We constantly speak with [person] to reassure them they are ok.”

Staff supported people with patience and in a calm and gentle way. Staff took time to explain to people what was happening and how they were going to support them. Staff provided gentle encouragement and prompting to ensure people remained safe.

Risks to people were assessed and regularly reviewed. Risk assessments were personalised, detailed, and gave staff clear guidance on ensuring people were supported safely. Risk assessments covered all areas of potential risk and included pressure area care, safe swallow, nutrition and hydration, use of bed rails and mobility.
