Our view of the service

Westerley Residential Care Home for the Elderly is a care home registered to provide accommodation, nursing and personal care, they are registered to provide this support to 30 people. This service provides support to older people. At the time of our assessment there were 18 people living at the service. The service is provided in an adapted building over 3 floors. This assessment commenced on 21 March 2024 and was completed 8 May 2024. The assessment included a visit from two inspectors, one of whom attended the service over a period of 2 days. An Expert by Experience visited on the first day of the site visit. An Expert by Experience is a person who has had personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of service. This assessment was undertaken to follow up on enforcement action against breaches we found at our previous inspections of the service. At that time the breaches in regulations affected the safe care and treatment of people, safeguarding people from abuse, safe and effective staffing and the governance and leadership at the service. At this assessment we looked at 13 quality statements. Under the key question of Safe, we looked at; Safeguarding; Involving people to manage risk; Safe environment; Infection prevention and control; Safe and effective staffing and Medicines optimization. Under the key question of Effective, we looked at; Assessing people’s needs; delivering evidence based care and treatment; Monitoring and improving outcomes and Consent to care and treatment. Under the key question of Well Led, we looked at; Shared direction and culture; Capable, compassionate and inclusive leaders; Governance management and sustainability, and Learning improvement and innovation. We found improvements in the care people received at the service. This included the management of risks to people’s safety, improvements in the environment, staffing levels and training and the governance and leadership of the service.

People's experience of this service

The feedback from people living at the service and their relatives who visited was positive. They felt there had been improvements in the care they received. People felt supported by the staff and managers who cared for them. People told us they were involved in decisions about their care. Relatives felt supported and involved in their family member’s care when this was needed. People were encouraged to be involved in a range of activities and people told us they chose what they wanted to take part in. People and relatives felt able to talk to staff and managers, if they had any concerns and felt they were listened to and when needed concerns were addressed in a satisfactory way.
