Our view of the service

Cedar Lodge Nursing Home is a nursing home providing care to older people with physical and health related support needs, some of whom also live with dementia. The assessment was completed between 19 March and 11 April 2024. We completed this assessment following a review of information shared with CQC about possible concerns around risk management, safeguarding and governance in this service. At this assessment we reviewed 4 quality statements in Safe and Well-Led only. People overall received safe and timely care and treatment from staff who understood their individual needs and followed people’s care plans. Staff knew how to safely support people around a range of their individual risks and how to protect them from abuse and neglect. The provider had good systems and processes in place for reporting and acting on safeguarding concerns, assessing, and reviewing people’s needs, staff training and recruitment. Staff were clear about their responsibilities and roles and felt supported by the registered manager and the provider. The provider had clear governance systems which were used to monitor the quality and safety of people’s care. However, some management records were not streamlined enough to provide robust assurances around governance and reporting of events in the home and how Mental Capacity Act 2005 Code of Practice was considered when making decisions around people’s care. The registered manager updated the records during and straight after the site visit and took action to streamline the governance records. We did not find these improvement needs affected the safety and quality of people’s care and future risks were minimised by the actions taken by the registered manager during this assessment.

People told us, “There’s all kinds of things the staff help me with. There are buttons (call bells) to push all over the place.”, “[Staff] keep an eye (on risks). I’m (using specific care equipment) and they know and can help me.” People’s relatives commented, “They are aware of all his needs.” and “I’m happy with [the care]. [Staff] sorted out the issue [around specific health concerns]. It was all sorted within a couple of days.” There were enough competent staff available to people to provide timely care and support. People said, “I’ve never been in a position where I’ve needed help and couldn’t get it.”, “I ring the bell and they are always around,” and “[Staff] know what they’re doing and know what we need.” A relative told us, “Yes, I can see that there are [enough staff], as I stayed all day yesterday and they check on [person] every half an hour.” People told us the registered manager was present and available in the home, should they need to speak with them. People said, “The manager is friendly and approachable.”, “[The home] is very well run. Looking around, I know that my life would be very different if it wasn’t for this place, we rely on [staff]. [The registered manager] is very nice, she’s in and out, pops around all the time. We also have [staff member] you can always ask anything of.”
