Our view of the service

The Lodge Care Home is located in Romford, Essex and supports older people, some of whom have dementia care needs. It is registered to provide accommodation and personal care for up to 94 people. The home has 2 floors with adapted facilities and en-suite rooms across 5 units. The last rating for the service under the previous provider was Requires Improvement, published on 24 August 2022. This inspection was carried out to follow up on action we told the provider to take at the last inspection. During this inspection the provider demonstrated that improvements have been made.

People's experience of this service

People and their relatives were positive about the care and support provided by staff. There were systems to ensure people were protected from risk of harm. Staff understood what abuse was and the actions to take if a person using the service was being abused. Risks to people were identified and care was planned to mitigate the risks. There were enough staff to meet people’s needs and the recruitment procedures were robust. The service had an efficient system to manage accidents and incidents and learn from them, so they were less likely to happen again. Medicines were well managed on people’s behalf. People were protected from the risks associated with the spread of infection. Staff received appropriate training, support and development which enabled them to meet people’s needs effectively. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice. People maintained good physical and mental health because the staff team worked closely with other health and social care professionals. People received care and support in accordance with their preferences, interests and diverse needs. They were involved in the planning of their care. People had the privacy they needed and were treated with dignity and respect at all times. They were supported to be as independent as possible. People were treated equally regardless of their abilities, background, lifestyle, values, beliefs and their cultures were respected. Care records had sufficient instructions for staff on how to deliver care and support to people, in accordance with their wishes. There was an open and inclusive culture in the service. The service worked in partnership with other organisations to support and care for people.
