Independence, choice and control

People were supported to do the things they wanted to do. One person told us “I love the garden” and “I am left to do what I want to do”. Families told us that staff respected the independence, choice and control of those they cared for. A relative told us “Anything [my relative] wants, they deal with it”.

Staff described to us how they supported people to maintain their independence. This included encouraging and supporting people to get washed and dressed and eat and drink with the least support required. They described how they supported people at meal times, to sit in ways that facilitated their independence and only supported people when they required it. One staff member commented, “We let them do as much as possible, we treat people as we would want to be treated”. Staff explained to us how they supported people to make choices. They told us they supported people in different ways dependant on their needs, such as showing people two items of clothing or asking them to pick form their wardrobe.

People were supported to see their friends and family regularly. Several relatives were visiting on the day of on site assessment and those present at lunchtime were offered a hot meal. We observed people walking around the service independently, people spent time in the areas of the service they wanted. Staff respected people's decisions about where they wanted to spend their time.

The provider’s Autonomy and Independence policy laid out 7 principles to ‘Support Self Care’. These included, providing information to people to support them to make decisions and developing people’s skills and confidence to remain independent.
