Updated 13 June 2024

Brigstock House is a care home registered to provide personal care and accommodation for up to eight people with a learning disability /autistic people and/or a physical disability. At the time of the inspection eight people were using the service. The assessment started on 18 June 2024. A site visit to gather people’s experiences and observe care practices was carried out on 21 June 2024. As part of the assessment we looked at 4 quality statements: Safeguarding; Safe environments; Safe and effective staffing; Infection prevention and control and Well-led: Governance, management and sustainability. We spoke with 6 people’s relatives, the deputy manager and the area manager. People used different ways of communicating, including using vocalisations, facial expressions and body language. We spent time with people, observing their interactions with staff. At the last inspection in February 2020 we rated this service ‘Good’ in safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. We carried out this inspection because we received concerns from a local authority relating to some aspects of the service identified in their 2023 quality assurance report. After that review the provider took comprehensive and appropriate action to address and resolve each concern. Following this responsive assessment, the service has received an overall rating of good for all the 4 quality statements assessed. The majority of the people living at Brigstock House had been living there for a long time and were well known to staff.

People's experience of the service

Updated 13 June 2024

Due to their learning disabilities, people were unable to vocalise their views about the home, however from our observations of people and the staff supporting them together with comments we received from relatives, it was clear people were safe and well cared for at Brigstock House. Comments from relatives included: “Staff are brilliant with [family member] and the staff support is very effective”, “The home is clean and has a lovely family feel, which is not surprising as most of the residents have lived there for twenty years or more, so it is like a family”, “There are family photos in [family members] room which is well decorated. There is a sitting room and dining room for residents and the ones that are more able can go their own rooms.” “My family member has a laptop which staff help them with when they want to watch cartoons, they love this staff support”, “Yes, I would definitely recommend the home to others. No, I don’t think there is anything I would improve or change, they do a splendid job. All the staff are very inclusive”.
