Our view of the service
Date of assessment 8 May 2024. We brought the assessment of this service forward due to concerns raised about the standard of care some people residing at the care home might receive and because they were rated requires improvement at their last inspection for the key question, 'Is the service well-led?' We looked at 4 key questions and 12 quality statements during this assessment. Heathland Court is a 'care home' that can provide nursing and personal care to up to 58 people. At the time of our inspection there were 56 older people living there, across 4 separate floors, each with its own adapted facilities. Two floors accommodate people with nursing needs and two floors accommodate people living with dementia. During our inspection we spoke with various managers and staff who worked at the care home including, the new registered manager, 2 clinical nurse leads, the services regional manager, 6 care workers, the chef and an activities coordinator. At this inspection we found the service had improved. The rating for the key question, 'Is the service well-led' has now changed from requires improvement to good. The service remains rated good overall. This is because the service now has a registered manager and two clinical lead nurses in post who ensure the care home is consistently well-led. Managers and staff understood their duty of care to safeguard people from abuse and protect them from harm. People were cared for and supported by staff who knew how to manage risks they might face. There were enough staff employed and they had received appropriate training to meet people's needs. Medicines systems were well-organised. People were encouraged to make decisions about the care and support they received and supported to maintain their independence. The provider listened to information about people who are most likely to experience inequality in experience or outcomes and tailored the care and support accordingly.
People's experience of this service
During our site-visit we spoke in-person with 7 people about their experiences of living at this care home, 5 visiting relatives and an external health care professional. People expressed being happy with the care and support they, their loved ones or clients received. One relative told us, “The carers are kind, caring and hard working. The care homes best asset. We are very pleased indeed with the overall care our [family member] receives at the home.” Another relative added, “The more I visit the home the more I appreciate the staff who are always so attentive to my [family member] needs. They treat her and everyone who lives here with the utmost respect and compassion. The staff are always going above and beyond. I can’t fault the place.” In addition, we received email feedback from 3 external health and social care professionals who were also satisfied with the overall standard of care and support. People told us they were impressed with the leadership approach of the new management team who were all accessible and ensured the care home was well-managed. One external health care professional told us, “Previously high rates of management changes was unsettling however, over the past 6-12 months, there seems to be more stability in the management staffing and carers. There is generally a more calm and positive ambiance which is as a result of less management and staff turnover.”
