Our view of the service

Queensgate Care Home is a care home that provides accommodation and personal care for a maximum of 40 older people, including people who may live with dementia. At the time of our inspection there were 30 people using the service. We last completed a targeted inspection to this service when it was registered under a previous provider. The last targeted inspection was completed under our old methodology on 17 February 2022 when we assessed infection prevention and control. The service was rated requires improvement. We completed this comprehensive assessment under the new registered provider and our new methodology. The assessment was prompted in part to review the breaches of regulation identified at our last inspection and to provide the service with a new rating under the new provider. This assessment was completed by 2 inspectors and 1 Expert by Experience. We visited the service on 24 and 30 July and 1 August 2024. We spoke with 7 people who lived at the home and 6 relatives. We spoke with 6 staff including care and senior staff, the acting manager, and deputy manager. We received feedback from 1 health professional. During this assessment we have identified concerns in relation to medicines, risk management, staff training and supervisions, governance, and the application of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 including the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. We identified 5 breaches of regulation under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014, and associated with safe care and treatment, safeguarding service users from abuse and improper treatment, premises and equipment, staffing and good governance. At the time of our assessment there was a manager in post but they had not commenced their application to register with the CQC as required. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns we found.

People's experience of this service

There was mixed feedback about people’s awareness and involvement in their care planning. People had mixed views on the awareness of, and skills held by staff to meet and respond to their individual needs and thought the service would benefit from more staff on duty sighting a lack of activities and stimulation during the day time. Some people felt their concerns were not always responded to due to a lack of perceived action taken. People told us their rooms were kept tidy but maintenance of the building and general home environment required improvement. We were told staff were good at communicating when supporting people with personal care. People and their relatives felt the home was well managed and that they were safe from known risks and otherwise avoidable harm.
