Our view of the service

The Springs Care Home provides accommodation and nursing care for a maximum of 65 older people living with dementia. Care is provided to people over three separate floors, with the ground floor providing residential support and the two upper floors provide nursing support. At the time of our inspection there were 50 people living at the home. The service was last inspected on 19 October 2021 and 03 November 2021, with an overall rating of requires improvement. This assessment was prompted in part due to concerns received about safe care and treatment of people, a decision was made for us to assess and examine those risks. This assessment commenced on 12 March 2024 and the overall rating remains at requires improvement. We identified shortfalls with medicines, person centred care, safe environments and leadership and governance. There was a peripatetic manager in post during our visit, a new manager had been appointed. At this assessment, we looked at 24 quality statements.

People's experience of this service

The majority of people and relatives told us staff were kind and caring and knew people well. People told us staff were responsive but not all people and relatives felt they were involved in people’s care plans. However, they were confident staff knew them and shared updated information about any changes which occurred. People and relatives told us they felt confident to raise concerns, but some people were unaware of who these could be raised to. Some people were unable to speak with us during our visit due to their current condition. We spent time observing staff interactions with people and spoke with relatives during our onsite visit. However, during some of our observations on 1 floor we identified a person waiting for a long period of time to receive support with a hoist transfer, despite inspectors prompting staff on 3 occasions. We also observed a lack of choice and interaction with people on 1 floor during the lunchtime experience and staff not responding in a timely manner to a person who required personal care.
