Independence, choice and control

People told us staff involved them in their care and treated them well. A person told us, “The staff couldn’t do more for you, they are kind and caring. There is plenty of food sometimes too much.” A relative said, “They are all so good they go over and above what we need.” Another relative said, “Staff are friendly and always very kind.”

Staff told us they supported people to be involved in their care and support. A staff member told us, “We make sure people are treated fairly here, we are like one big family.”

Throughout the assessment we observed staff promoting people’s independence positively. People’s choices and decisions were respected by staff. The service had a relaxed atmosphere and people responded positively when staff approached them in a kind and respectful way. A professional told us, “All care staff encountered in the home are friendly and caring towards their residents. The staff appear to interact well with the residents and know their individual needs.”

People’s care plans contained information for staff about their strengths, abilities and how staff could support them with choices in relation to their care and support. People were enabled to maintain and develop relationships with those close to them and there were no restrictions on visiting the service. People had access to activities and the local community to promote and support their independence, health and wellbeing. Activities included exercise sessions, quizzes, art sessions, bingo and trips out. A professional told us, “All care staff encountered in the home are friendly and caring towards their residents. The staff appear to interact well with the residents and know their individual needs.”
