We looked at 2 quality statements under the Caring key question: Kindness, compassion and dignity and treating people as individuals. The provider had failed to ensure that care provided promoted people’s privacy and dignity. Staff did not always provide care and support to people in a way that promoted their independence and preferences.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

People were not always treated with kindness, compassion and dignity. One person told us, “Certain staff are caring but some are not very good at all. I said I didn’t want male carers, but sometimes male carers come to me, I refuse but sometimes I have no choice”. Another person told us they were unhappy living at the service. People’s needs were not always responded to quickly and efficiently. For example, one person had stopped going to the lounge and dining room because they said staff always took too long to take them back to their room when they needed the toilet. Some people and their relatives shared different views. Comments included, “The girls are all kind to me” and “Most of the staff are alright, they are nice”. One person spoke about the new manager and said, “The new manager is as good as gold, she can’t do enough for you”.

Some staff we spoke with told us they were rushed. One staff member told us, “[Person’s name] will just sit there unhappy all day, I try to talk to her but if you are seen you are just told to go and do someone's personal care or go somewhere else, it is like they think you shouldn’t spend time with people. I think it is important”.

We did not gather feedback from partners as part of this assessment.

We saw that staff were task focussed and could see throughout our visit at various times of the day they were rushed. We saw some staff did not acknowledge people when they were calling for support.

Treating people as individuals

People were not always treated as individuals. Many of the people we spoke to told us they had nothing to do and spent most of the time in their room. One person told us, “I do nothing all day, there’s nothing to do”. People were mostly asleep and left on their own.

The manager told us they had a vacancy for an activity coordinator which they were recruiting to. Following our visit, the provider provided an update that they had successfully recruited and now had an activity coordinator in post.

Support for people was not person-centred and did not respect people's preferences and wishes. We saw staff including agency staff, had variable levels of understanding of people’s needs and preferences. People's personal care was not always promoted or carefully carried out. One person people had dirty fingernails on all 3 occasions we visited the service. There was limited external entertainment or visitors to enrich people's spiritual wellbeing, hobbies and interests. We saw most people spent time on their own in their room, the only interaction was when staff attended to provide support. Some people received visits from family and friends.

The provider operated a resident of the day review system, this gave opportunity for each person’s care records to be reviewed once a month. However, we found that care plans were not always person centred and did not evidence people were involved in giving their feedback on the care and support they received.
