Staff clearly cared about the people they supported and took time to get to know them and their wishes and preferences for their care. They spoke about people with affection and empathy. One staff member told us, “Sometimes you’re the only face they see, so I always come in with a smile.” Another staff member said, “I am doing this because I was bought up to be caring and it’s in my nature to do this job.” Other comments included, “Sometimes they just want to see a smiley face and talk, it’s not always about hands on care” and “I just want to give them the best possible life they can have”. Staff understood the importance of protecting people's dignity and being respectful. For example, being mindful when providing personal care to keep people covered as much as possible.
A health care professional who had been involved in supporting the home with improvements told us they had nothing but praise for the staff who were helpful, open and welcoming. They had a good relationship with staff at the home and had no concerns.
We consistently observed staff being friendly and caring. Although very busy, staff were bubbly and chatty with people they supported. They were tuned in to peoples’ behaviour and mood and noticed when they might be unhappy or needed some help. They prioritised people over other tasks.
