Our view of the service

Great Oaks is registered to provide care, nursing and support for up to 80 people. The home provides residential and nursing care for older adults, some of whom are living with dementia. At the time of this assessment, there were 56 people living at the service. This assessment was prompted by concerns about general safety of people and staff management. However, following this assessment we were fully assured of ongoing practice and developments within the service, this included the arrangements in place to keep people safe. The assessment took place between 13 December and 16 December 2024. Great Oaks had undergone significant management changes, and many new processes had been implemented. The service was working alongside the local authority improvement teams and the provider’s quality teams to ensure the changes were embedded. People had risk assessments in place for all their care, nursing and support needs. Risk assessments were completed and supported people to be as safe as possible. Safeguarding procedures were in place and there was confidence in the management to address any issues. People received their medicines as prescribed. Lessons were learnt from events within the service. Recruitment processes were in place and there was enough staff planned on duty to meet the needs of people. Training was in place for staff, and supervisions and support were available. Governance systems were in place and being developed further. The manager told us they were confident in the staff team. We received positive feedback about the management team and the provider. We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.
