During a routine inspection

There are two drug and alcohol services operating from the same site. The Bromley young person's alcohol and substance service is called Bypass and was funded by the London Borough of Bromley. At the time of our visit the service was delivering individual treatment to 15 young people and group work sessions in schools and colleges. We were not able to talk with any young people during this inspection due to the confidential nature of the service.

The shared care adults alcohol and substance misuse service was being funded by the borough of Bromley. At the time of our visit it provided support and recovery services for 80 people. People told us that they would recommend the service to others and one person said,' The service is good, it's helped me.'

The provider had systems in place to gain consent from people in both services before providing treatment. We found initial assessments, treatment plans and risk assessments in people's records. Both services worked in partnership with other professionals and community services.

The provider had recruitment and selection policy in place which ensured staff had the right skills and experience to meet the needs of people they supported. There were effective systems to regularly assess and monitor the quality of the service that people received. Four out of five people we spoke with from the adult service said the service was good and one person described the service as 'fantastic.'

During a routine inspection

We were unable to speak to people regarding the service they received due to the age of some of the people being supported and nature of the issues. However, people's feedback had been collated and comments included 'there were good days and bad days and I realised that neither brought a halt to the progress I was making, the advisor I was seeing helped me share my opinions in every session and offered an alternative, sensible and helpful point of view each time'. And 'I feel more than capable of coping with anything life throws at me'. Another person stated said 'really comfortable and relaxed environment ' I didn't feel judged by my worker'.

We found that the service provided information relating to drug and alcohol misuse and support services were easy to access either directly or by referral from the youth offending teams or GP's. We found that the service took account of people's individual preferences and staff were knowledgeable about the individual needs of people using the service. Risk assessments and care plans were up to date. Staff had attended relevant training and there was some monitoring the quality of the service provided.
