Requires improvement

Updated 4 December 2024

Date of Assessment: 20 January 2025 to 5 February 2025. Westwood Lodge Care Home is a residential care home providing nursing and personal care for up to 44 people who have physical and mental health conditions, including those suffering from alcohol and substance addictions. At the time of the inspection 41 people used the service.

We found 4 breaches of regulations in relation to safe care and treatment, person centred care, premises and equipment and governance. The concerns included issues with the management of medicines, infection control, safety of the environment, dining experiences, record keeping, lack of activities and ineffective quality monitoring.

The service had recently gone through a number of management changes, including the appointment of a new nominated individual and a new manager. The nominated individual is responsible for supervising the management of the service on behalf of the provider. The new management team had already identified some poor practices and concerns prior to this assessment, and work had started to address these. However, these improvements still needed to be fully embedded and monitored over time.

There was enough staff. Staff were kind and considerate but had lacked leadership at times and had not always received suitable support. There was no current registered manager at the service.

We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of the service

Updated 4 December 2024

People were not always positive about the quality of care and support they received. Where concerns were raised, this was brought to the attention of the management team to investigate and address. Most people felt safe. Although our findings did not always concur with this perception. People told us of problems with the building and its maintenance. Many people thought the building and decoration had improved and told us of the updates the provider had made. However, there were still many areas which needed to be updated or improved. People told us the food had not always been good, but they were hopeful the new chef would improve this.
