Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the service involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. People were supported to retain relationships with people important to them. People were able to take part in and choose activities they wished to pursue. Staff was supportive of these practices and records reflected this.

Independence, choice and control

People told us they took part in regular activities and had visitors. One person said, “I decide what I want to do, then staff support me and help me go to different places. I am going to bingo this week and I have been out for lunch. I also help with washing up and cleaning.” People’s relatives felt the service encouraged people to keep in touch with their loved ones. One person said, “Yes, we do keep in regular touch.” Relatives also thought that people were supported to take part in activities.

Staff told us how they got involved in supporting people to maintain relationships with loved ones, how they tried to encourage people’s independence and how they supported people to take part in activities. Staff comments included, “They (people) get involved in activity planning, weekly menus, they choose their clothes and things.” And “Yes, they (people) have enough to do, they go swimming and for walks and to the gym, sometimes they go to the pub and a farm and the cinema.”

On both days of the inspection, we observed all three residents out enjoying activities. We were able to review some photographs of the residents taking part in activities.

People had activity plans in place that were put together with people’s involvement.
