Independence, choice and control

People were involved in decisions about their care and how they would like to be supported and independence was promoted. A person commented, "Yes, they [staff] are very caring." A person told us, "Yes, I do [involved in decisions) and I have been involved in writing up [care plans)." A relative told us, "100% staff are caring. They do (promote independence). However, [person] needs a lot of support. It’s a very good service."

Staff told us they promoted peoples independence and involved people with decisions when supporting them. A staff member commented, "We always encourage our people wherever possible to remain as independent as they can and are on hand to offer support wherever needed." Another staff member told us, "I would always communicate with them and give them choices of daily tasks, for example on food , preferences of clothing and personal care."

People had been involved in the planning of their care to ensure they received personalised care and support. Reviews were also carried out with people and relatives to ensure people always received person centred care. Care plans included how people liked to be supported and to encourage independence. People had a copy of their care plans at home. Systems were in place to obtain feedback from people to ensure there was a culture of continuous improvement through telephone and surveys. The service undertook regular care planning reviews, people were encourage to lead on their own reviews with the support of staff. There was clear evidence that adjustments were made after care reviews took place. One person told us that they felt this process was very helpful and supportive.
