At this assessment we did not assess all quality statements within this key question. The overall rating for this key question remains good based on the findings at the last inspection. The provider assessed and reviewed people’s health, care, and wellbeing with them. Staff worked with other professionals and services to support people. People were supported to understand their right to consent and staff empowered them to make their own decisions.

Assessing needs

People told us they were involved in the planning of their care and support. A person told us they were supported to be part of reviews, “Staff help us, they sit down and talk to me.”

Staff knew people well and understood their care and support needs including how people communicated. Staff told us how they had been trained to support a person so they could effectively communicate with them and supported them further by using a picture exchange communication system (PECS). Staff told us they gave people as much choice and control as possible.

People’s care and support plans reflected people’s individual preferences and methods of communication. Regular reviews were carried out to discuss their current care and support needs. People were supported to be fully involved with these.

People told us they made decisions about their care and treatment. They described how staff kept them informed and updated so they could make decisions.

Staff explained how they ensured people were empowered to make decisions including using communication aids to support people’s understanding. They told us most people at Ashby Court had capacity to make decisions around their care.

People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible. Where restrictions had been placed on a person’s liberty to keep them safe, these were lawful and authorised by the local authority.
