Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

Staff and leaders told us they encouraged people to be as independent as possible. They told us they promoted people’s independence and supported them to know their rights and have choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. For example people's emotional, social and educational aspirations were gathered so that staff could support them in these areas. One person enjoyed activities such as using public transport, learning from a personal tutor, going to their local mosque and the local gym. Records showed they were able to do these activities with the help of the service. People were prompted by staff to tend to their care needs. We found people had the independence to do certain personal care tasks for themselves and with little assistance.

The provider had arrangements in place to ensure that people’s individual needs were initially assessed and then monitored by staff. Care plans were updated when people needs change. Changes were communicated to staff and people's care plans were then updated with the involvement of people and their relatives. This ensured people's rights and independence were continually respected and protected.
