Kindness, compassion and dignity
People were treated fairly, according to their needs, with their dignity maintained at all times. Comments from people included, “They are respectful to me, they help me get dressed and washed, but do talk to me,” “I feel the staff are kind, no raised voices, or snappiness, pleasant I would say” and “Nice staff team, kind and do treat us well.” Similarly, relatives told us their loved ones were treated with kindness and compassion one telling us, “Yes, very much so, never had to question anything. No concerns at all. When walking around the home never seen staff be anything but kind to residents.” Staff told us about how they approach people to support them in an understanding way, giving people choices and taking time to let people respond to them. A staff member said, “Yes people are given choices. They are treated with kindness. We give people a chance to speak – some need more time so we are patient.” Another told us, “I always ensure I knock before going in a room, I wouldn’t want people to just walk in my house, we get training and I treat them like I would like to be treated.” A visiting professional told us how they were impressed with the care that was given, appropriate to people’s needs and also responding to their wishes and concerns. Throughout our assessment we observed staff speaking to people kindly when supporting them.
