During a themed inspection looking at Dignity and Nutrition
The inspection team was led by a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspector joined by another CQC inspector, a practising professional and an Expert by Experience, who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of service.
We visited two wards, one female ward and one male ward during our visit and we spoke with patients and staff. We spoke with six patients and nine staff members and looked at four patient care records.
The patients we spoke with told us they were treated with dignity and respect. They also confirmed that they were asked what name they wished to be called and their wishes were respected.
Patients were very positive about how staff had supported them during their stay.
Comments included 'they are all very nice', 'the manager is very pleasant', 'I've never heard them raise their voices' and 'sometimes they have to be firm with us but that's understandable if it's in our care plan'.
We observed staff interacting with and supporting patients in a kind and respectful way. We saw that staff had a good skill mix and had experience to understand the needs of patients in their care.
Patients were generally positive about the hospital regarding the ward environment, choice of menu, facilities and their surroundings. We heard that there was a reasonable choice and range of meals available and there was support or monitoring of patients nutritional needs when needed.
