NHS Humber Trust were providing in-patient services at HMP Wakefield. This formed part of the wider healthcare services available at HMP Wakefield provided by multiple providers. Due to the complex nature of the provider arrangements in place at the prison, partnership working with both the other providers and the prison itself were necessary in order to ensure a joined up service was provided. This was not always at the level it needed to be and there were gaps in joint working. Staff told us that there were some issues with in-patient beds being blocked to clinical admissions and this impacted on their ability to provide in-patient services at full capacity. Medicine management and pharmacy services were provided by another provider.
Patients we spoke with were happy with the service that was provided and we observed that the unit was calm and relaxed during our inspection. There were some issues with the environment within the in-patient unit and these were being raised on a regular basis with the prison.
There were processes in place for supervision, training and support of staff and these were seen to be effective and appropriate.
