HMP Wymott is a men’s prison located in Leyland, Lancashire and operated by HM Prison and Probation Service. It can hold up to 1170 sentenced prisoners.
We carried out an announced focused inspection of healthcare services provided by Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) at HMP Wymott to follow up on the Requirement Notices issued after our previous inspection in December 2023 (https://api.cqc.org.uk/public/v1/reports/ebe347fe-34ec-4924-ab61-5088bb42e8e9?20240226080043). We also looked at the management of medicines, care and treatment for long-term conditions and access to social care during this inspection. Overall, we looked at 11 quality statements.
At this inspection, we found the provider had made improvements and was no longer in breach of regulations 16 and 18. However, we found a new breach of regulation 12 (Safe care and treatment) in relation to medicines management processes. We also identified some areas the provider should improve further.
The provider must:
• Improve the process for ensuring patients get their in-possession (IP) medicines, including critical medicines, and review the procedure for escalation when patients do not attend.
• Monitor missed doses where patients do not receive their medicines as prescribed and take appropriate action.
The provider should:
• Ensure records accurately reflect where patients receive their medicines at discharge so the organisation can monitor compliance.
• Monitor the process for using prescription stationery to ensure that prescriptions are accounted for and there are no gaps in records.
• Ensure care plans are personalised to reflect patients’ individual needs, in particular, those with complex care needs or high-risk conditions.
The inspection team was made up of 3 Health and Justice Inspectors, a Pharmacist Specialist and a Medicines Inspector.
We do not currently rate services provided in prisons.
