Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

Relatives responses regarding independence, choice and control were extremely positive. They were happy with the way people were supported to live as full a life as possible. One relative said, “Yes, we feel the staff encourage [Name] to be as independent as possible and don’t feel they are restricted at all.” A further relative said, “The staff treat [Name] with dignity and respect. They are quite independent in many areas of their life, e.g. showers, managing personal hygiene and making drinks etc. However, the staff are there if [Name] needs any assistance.” They went on to say their family member’s independence was actively encouraged by staff, this included social activities such as cooking and horse riding. The relative went on to say, “I’m aware that risk assessments have been carried out in respect of these activities which helps developing independence.” A third relative said, “The staff will communicate with [Name] via signing, they offer them choices in respect of food and activities, and they encourage [Name] to be as independent as possible.”

The registered manager’s and staff feedback showed they were all committed to supporting people’s independence through their knowledge of the person and feedback from their relatives. The registered manager said, “We talk to relatives, we use our own observations of people's behaviours when providing care. We see what things people like and make sure the information is put in their plans. People also have key workers.” All the staff we spoke with had very good knowledge of the people they supported. One staff member said, “We (staff) all do (know people well), we talk to each other and use the care plans, handovers and meetings to discuss people, it’s important to know every one's likes and dislikes.” They went on to say they would be happy for one of their relatives to use the service if they needed to. They said, “It really is a lovely environment, and the guys are really well cared for, they get to do things they enjoy like [Name] and their sailing”.

Throughout our site visit we saw positive interactions between people and staff. Staff worked with people to support them according to their skill set. People were encouraged to join in daily activities such as cooking preparation. We saw one person being supported to prepare vegetables, the staff member used a hand over hand approach to allow the person to be involved in the process. We noted this support was in line with the information in the person’s care plan.

People’s care plans had very good information about their needs and how staff should support their independence and ensure they had as much control over their day to day lives as possible. The information was up to date and consistent with the way people were supported. Staff used pictures, or individualised signs booklets which were kept behind every one’s bedroom doors.
