Independence, choice and control
People were encouraged to be as independent as possible. One relative told us, “[My relative] is a fighter and still has a sense of humour the carers can get them to do the things I can’t get them to do. For example, staff encouraged [my relative] to build confidence in walking independently following a recommendation made by the physio therapist.”
Staff and leaders promoted people’s independence. Staff explained how important it was to ensure people remained as independent for as long as possible. Staff knew people well and could explain how people liked to be supported. Some people had equipment in place which promoted their independence. For example, walking aids or a hoist/sling.
Care plans in place contained details in them around people’s preferences and how they liked to be supported. Equipment to aid independence was in place. Evidence in care plans and daily logs showed people had been encouraged to participate in their care and support as much as they could.
