Independence, choice and control
Care plans emphasised the importance of promoting choice, independence and control. The care plans focused on what people could do well and the support needed from staff. Staff met with people, their relatives and other external professionals to discuss their support and any changes required and these were reviewed regularly and updated when a person’s care requirements changed.
People and relatives, we spoke to told us staff promoted people’s independence to enable them to have control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Comments included, “The carers don’t rush [family member] and take their time, as well as talking and encouraging them, asking if it is ok to shower them and get [family member] dressed. They [staff] always ask [family member] what clothes they would like to wear”, “All of the carers I have had over the past years have all known my routine, they are kind and treat me with dignity and respect” and, “The two regular carers talk to [family member] and not at them. Staff treat them like an individual who has an identity, and they really are lovely. They encourage [family member] to be as independent as possible.”
Staff spoken with were aware of people’s likes, dislikes and preferences relating to social activities. One member of staff told us, “I always read the care plans, I will be at home even and catch up as there might be something I need to know for the morning.”
