People liked the staff who provided their care. They described them as caring and professional. People’s independence was promoted, and people had been able to do more independently, with the care and encouragement from staff. Staff supported people to work towards what was important to them. Staff understood the importance of people’s overall well-being and of providing person-centred care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

People had positive relationships with the staff who provided their care. One person told us, “Staff are really lovely.” Another person described getting on, ‘Like a house on fire’, with the staff that provided their care. Feedback and thank you cards from people who used the service praised the staff and described them as caring, amazing and professional.

Leaders knew what people liked to do and how the staff team supported them to achieve their goals and promote their independence. Staff spoke respectfully about the people they cared for and understood what was important to people. Staff made sure people’s choices were respected and they were involved in their care and how this promoted their dignity.

Independence, choice and control

Staff had consistently helped people improve or maintain their independence. People had achieved more movement and had been able to do more for themselves with the support and encouragement of staff. One person told us, "I love being so involved.” Another person told us, “I have so much power [in my care arrangements]; I recruit and train my carers, and I am so much happier; my life has been so much better.”

Leaders spoke about what people liked to do and how the staff team supported them to achieve their goals and promote their independence. One person who used the service was involved as a volunteer and contributed their time to assist staff in office duties. Leaders understood when people needed to access advocacy services and knew how to support them to obtain this support when needed. Staff understood what was important to people and supported them towards their goals. This included helping people to access their community and supporting their autonomy. One staff member told us, “So following occupational therapy support we now help [name of person] into the kitchen to help cook their breakfast instead of sitting in the room. They really love this.” Another staff member told us how one person was supported to volunteer at the office and how much they enjoyed this. Staff consistently went above and beyond to provide people with choices so that they could be involved in their care and empowered. Staff were confident to use any equipment that people needed to enable their independence, such as wheelchairs and communication aids.

The provider’s ‘Dignity in Care’ statement demonstrated their commitment to providing personalised care and for people to be at the centre of any care decisions taken.
