Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. People told us, “I like living here and I like the staff, I want to live here all the time.” A relative said, “The staff a very kind and caring and [our relative] adores them, it’s wonderful.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. People received care and support that was tailored to their individual needs by staff who knew them well. People had choice and control over how they spent their time and were able to pursue interests of their choice outside of their home environment including days out, holidays and regular social clubs.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were able to spend time with others that were important to them, and staff supported people to facilitate and maintain relationships. People’s plans of care included detailed information about people’s communication needs so that everyone regardless of their communication style could communicate their wishes. People were able to decorate and personalise their living spaces in line with their preferences.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. People’s plans of care contained detailed information about how the person preferred to be supported and any risks staff needed to be aware of. Staff were observed to support people in line with their wishes and agreed plans. Where people required support from outside agencies, staff at the service facilitated referrals and appointments.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. The provider had a range of programmes in place to support staff well-being, including webinars and information on diversity, how to manage stress, and budgeting. The provider ensured staff had regular supervision sessions to discuss their development and any concerns they may have. A staff member told us, “I most definitely feel supported in my role.” Another staff member said, “The provider is good in terms of progression and supports staff to be ambitious.”
