Independence, choice and control

Score: 2

People confirmed they were involved in the planning of their care at the outset and the majority told us they could recall reviews, either over the telephone or through a visit from the provider. A small number felt the timeliness of calls was arranged based on the convenience for the service, rather than their person-centred needs. Feedback about communication from the office and other staff was mixed, with some people telling us it was always positive and others stating they weren’t always listened to as much as they would anticipate. A number of people also told us they did not receive rotas in advance, meaning they weren’t always sure who would be arriving to support them.

Staff helped people go about their day to day life as unobtrusively as possible. For the most part, they understood what was important to people and how people wanted to be supported.

There was a structured pre-assessment and ongoing assessment of people’s needs in place. There were times when people’s needs changed, and this had not always been flagged appropriately to external agencies to ensure people’s care packages could be more formally reviewed.
