Independence, choice and control
Staff described how they supported people to be as independent as possible. They understood the importance of making sure people were enable to do as much as possible for themselves and continue with activities.
Relatives gave us examples of how staff supported people to be independent and respected their choices. One person liked being with other people during the day. Staff supported them to do this and the person spent time in the company of staff and other people, which they enjoyed. Another relative described to us how their loved one told staff what they wanted and that staff did what was asked.
People's support plans included information about people's routines and the support they needed to maintain their skills and independence. People's support plans included statements such as 'very capable' and the skills they had and how these needed to be maintained.
People were supported to follow their preferred routines. For example, some people chose to get up and go to bed late, while others got up earlier. Staff knew people’s routines and explained these to us. They checked to make sure people were safe and happy but did not interfere in their routine. One person liked to open and close all of the doors and gates when they went to the dining room for a meal. Staff explained this to us so we would not inadvertently get in the way of the person’s routine. Staff understood how people communicated what they wanted. We observed staff supporting people to go out when they said they wanted to. One person opened the door for staff to leave when they wished to be alone. Some people liked to spend time alone while others liked to be with other people. We observed some people eating meals and playing games together while other people spent time doing activities and eating on their own. Spaces had been provided so people were able to spend time alone away from their bedrooms if they wished to.
