This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.
Kindness, compassion and dignity
Patients told us they had been treated with kindness and compassion and their dignity had been respected by staff. Kindness and compassion were consistently positive in comments across the 6 months of healthwatch feedback reports.
Patients told us that staff explained their care and treatment options in a way they could understand and were asked if they had any cultural or social needs.
A Healthwatch A&E Listening Event reported 80% of those surveyed said they felt their privacy had been maintained as much as possible, even when cared for in non-clinical areas such as corridors.
Leaders told us they were assured that patients received kind, compassionate and dignified care, by having regular department walk arounds and through audits.
The IT system to monitor patient observations did not allow staff to calculate a National Early Warning Score (NEWS) without entering a pain score; this ensured staff always considered pain levels.
Staff told us they knew what to do should they be concerned about a member of staff’s behaviour and the department was described as having a strong culture of kindness, compassion, and dignity.
Staff told us how they would maintain confidentiality for patients.
Feedback from partners was positive for kindness, compassion and dignity. Partners acknowledged that issues with capacity made this difficult, however leaders and staff were responsive to ensuring patients were treated with respect, kindness and dignity.
Partners described that the department’s staff were mindful of both people’s physical health and also their mental health and that leaders acted on negative feedback.
We observed staff giving kind and compassionate care to patients and observed the measures that had been put in place to give patients privacy and dignity when being cared for in non-clinical areas.
