Patients felt staff were knowledgeable and there were only a few occasions where appointments were cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. However, the service offered an alternative clinician to allow continuation of treatment. Staff told us the service has grown over the past few years and so had the staff team. Their caseloads were manageable and there was access to a full multi-disciplinary team. Staff felt supported and received regular managerial supervisions.

Safe and effective staffing

Score: 3

People who use the service told us they felt staff were knowledgeable and experienced in their role. There were few occasions where sessions were cancelled due to short staffing but that occurred a few years ago. People told us when a session was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances the service offered an alternative clinician to allow continuation of treatment.

Staff told us that although the service had grown over the past few years the staff teams has grown with it. Caseloads were manageable and management had introduced a positive change in how supervisions were managed. Both operational leaders and clinical leads were part of staff supervisions so that caseloads were discussed in a supportive manner and changes would be made. Administrative support was important for the service and unfortunately, recently there had been an issue with retention. The service used agency to support when needed. Staff told us they had completed the trusts mandatory training programme but also had access to specialist training including domestic violence, MANTRA (Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults) training and sexual exploitation. There was a full multi-disciplinary team in place with a range of clinicians and skills mix within the team. Staff told us the functionality and and range of skills meant they could offer the best support for patients.

We saw staff were reassuring and kind towards patients during patient phone calls. We saw staff coming into the office to attend meetings and carry out assessments and attend risk meetings. We saw a full multidisciplinary team present. All staff were quietly spoken, professional and caring in nature. We were shown the ward to board data which showed the data around supervisions, training, and appraisals. All staff received these and management had appropriate oversight.

The office was staffed to compliment was occurring on the day of the assessment. We were able to observe team meeting and referral meetings. The meetings were collaborative and supportive. Operation leads and service manager alongside the clinical lead had oversight on case management through supervisions and ward to board information. The weekly team meetings and referral meetings also provided oversight. The tracker on the ward to board helped leaders to oversee training needs and allowed each topic to be drilled down into further information.
