Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People were supported to have choice and control over their own care. People told us they were supported to undertake activities they wanted to do. One person told us about going to stables to assist with horses, another told us about going fishing and to the theatre. Each person chose what holiday they wished to go on each year. We saw staff offering choices of meals to people and checking with them whether they wanted to go out. People were able to choose where they spent their day. One person talked about the arrangements made with him to meet his mother. Relatives told us they could visit when they liked and their loved-one could be supported to visit them if they wished to. One relative said, “Anytime, the staff will bring [loved-one] down to see me, like on Mother’s Day. They have also brought them down for a holiday.” We saw in people’s care records there was an emphasis on supporting and encouraging people to do things for themselves, such as brushing their teeth. The aim of the service is to promote independence as much as possible.
