Independence, choice and control
The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Staff ensured people had current information to promote their independence to participate in activities both in the service and in the local community. A staff member told us, “Each week, residents come with their diary, and we agree what days we will go out for shopping, to make our own meals and whether anyone has had hospital or doctor appointments. We may adjust the timings of these regular activities depending on which staff member they choose to support them.” People’s care plans provided details for staff about how to support people during times of distress, considering both the person experiencing distress and consideration for other people who may witness the event. The care plan gave clear instructions to staff such as, "I will be listened to even if the words I am saying seem strange" and explained this response is at the request of the person to help reassure them.
