People were safe being supported by staff at the service. Staff knew how to safeguard people from abuse and there were enough staff to ensure people had their care visits on time. People were supported safely with their medicines.

Safeguarding

People and their relatives told us they felt safe being supported by staff. One relative said, ‘‘[Family members] needs are all met in the safest way possible. I have absolutely no concerns with how the staff support them.’’

Staff were trained in safeguarding and knew what signs may indicate people were at risk of being abused. They knew how to report concerns both internally and externally to partes such as the local authority safeguarding team.

Processes were in place to investigate accidents and incidents and report safeguarding concerns if this was necessary. Regular staff meetings were held to discuss potential safeguarding concerns so lessons could be learnt.

Involving people to manage risks

People and their relatives told us staff supported them safely to manage known risks. One relative said, ‘‘[Staff] really know every little thing they need to do to keep [family member] safe. Relatives also told us they were asked to speak about and be involved in discussions about their family members support plans and risk assessments.

Staff were knowledgeable about the risks people faced and knew how to mitigate these risks as far as possible. Staff told us how they informed the office if they felt people’s risk assessments needed updating.

People’s care plans and risk assessments were detailed and gave good guidance to staff about how best to mitigate risk to people. The management team held regular meetings with the staff team to discuss risk assessments and any changes necessary.

Safe and effective staffing

People told us staff arrived on time for their care visits and stayed for the full duration of the visit. One relative said, ‘‘We have never had an issue with staff arriving late or anything like that. They always stay and chat with [family member] if they have lots of time left after helping them with [support needs].’’ People and relatives also told us they felt staff were well trained and knew how to support them/ their family member with all of their support needs.

Staff told us they had enough time during care visits to support people with their needs but also spend some time chatting and socialising with them. They told us they had plenty of time to travel between care visits. Staff were positive about their training and knowledgeable about what they had learned.

The management team had processes in place to monitor care visits on a daily basis and also audited care visits monthly. The system being used alerted management if any issue arose so they could be dealt with immediately. The management team spent time with staff directly observing them when they supported people to give them feedback about how to continually develop in their roles. Staff were recruited safely in line with legislation.

Medicines optimisation

People and relatives told us staff supported them safely with their medicines. One relative said, ‘‘It was a relief when [staff] took over the medicines for [family member]. I know I can trust them and there are checks to make sure it is all done correctly.’’

Staff were trained in administering medicines safely and told us what they would do in situations such as medicines being refused by people. They also told us in detail how they recorded medicines administration. Staff’s competency to administer medicines was assessed regularly by the management team.

Processes were in place to help ensure medicines were administered safely. Staff recorded medicines administration, and this was regularly checked and audited by the management team. A medication policy detailed actions staff should take if any errors occurred.
