Independence, choice and control
People were supported by staff who were kind, caring and respectful. People said they could have visitors anytime they wanted and were able to spend time with them privately as well as in the coffee shop and communal areas. Relatives explained their loved ones had been supported to maintain their independence as well as relationships and to engage in culturally relevant activities as well as trips out and entertainment in the home.
Staff knew people well and understood the importance of respecting people’s choices and involving them in decision making. Leaders discussed the importance of making sure people received information in a way they could understand. They explained how they involved advocacy services for some people to ensure they were able to understand their rights and were supported with decision making. Staff spoke to us about activities and commented that whilst some people had access to activities and the local community to promote and support their independence and wellbeing, some people who were cared for in bed or chose to stay in their rooms had limited opportunities. We shared this with leaders who discussed plans to improve activity provision.
We observed positive interactions between staff and people, with staff encouraging and supporting people to make decisions which staff respected. Our observations supported the staff comments in relation to not everyone having equal access to meaningful activities. Leaders were responsive to our feedback and took action to develop the activities programme to ensure everyone could be included.
Processes were in place to ensure care plans included information to promote people’s independence, choice and control in a safe manner. Where relevant this included the use of appropriate equipment to support and maximise people’s independence. Care records evidenced discussions had taken place with people and their relatives.
