Staff worked with people, and their relatives to assess and review their health, care, wellbeing and communication needs with them. Staff knew people well and made sure they were at the centre of their care and involved in decision making.

Person-centred Care

People were at the centre of their care and various methods were used to make sure they were involved in decision making. One person said, “I make my own decisions and its always a female staff member who helps me.” People, and their relatives spoke positively about the care staff, with one relative saying, “They are special people, caring people.”

Leaders explained the importance of meeting with people, and family members so they understood people’s care needs and preferences as well as any cultural and religious needs for example. Staff shared how they would offer people choices of activities, what to eat, where to dine, and what to wear as examples.

We observed staff providing care and support that was appropriate, and in line with people’s care plans. Staff understood people’s needs well and we saw how they supported people with decision making and were respectful of their choices.

Equity in experiences and outcomes

There was a positive culture within the staff team and staff tailored care and support to meet people’s diverse needs. People felt listened to and were happy with the care and support they received.

Leaders explained the service user guide explained people’s rights and responsibilities, however they would also access an advocacy service if people needed any additional support in speaking up and making decisions. Alongside this there was also access to translation services and easy read and pictorial documents to support people to be share their experiences and feedback. There was a diverse staff team and leaders said they made sure there was an appropriate mix of staff skills and backgrounds on shift each day. Staff said they felt supported equally by management and were happy with the management arrangements in place.

Policies and procedures were in place in relation to equity and staff had attended training in equality and diversity. A range of methods were used to seek feedback from people, relatives and staff including surveys, meetings and conversations with operations managers. People’s views were listened to, and action taken in response to feedback. This was shared with people by way of 'You said, We did’ updates and newsletters.
